We have the luck to have Dr David Walmsey*, a leading transport expert, who will talk about the various benefits trams and light rail (when integrated with buses), brings to a city including urban development, and also give an introduction to the UKTram Route Map which details how a new transport corridor gets its various approvals. He will explain how we can afford it and that if properly implemented they do not have to be over budget, late, and cause massive delays, as has unfortunately was the case in the Edinburgh scheme's first phase. However, lessons were learned and the second Edinburgh phase was on time and on budget.

**Dr David Walmsley. Chartered Member of the ILT and a Member of the CIHT. BSc and PhD in physics.

He was formerly Fixed Track Executive at the Confederation of Passenger Transport and before that worked at the Transport Research Laboratory mainly on public transport projects. Since retiring in 2012 he has worked on a European tram safety project and on some projects for UK Tram. He has won numerous awards.

WETA the West of England Transport Association is the group formed after the very well-attended meeting On October 8th where Professor Mark Barry spoke about how and why Cardiff had decided to revitalize its transport network with trams and tram-trains, and advice for Bristol on how and why to do the same.

WETA is intended to be a forum for all groups and stakeholders - large firms, Local Authorities, Local transport and environment campaign groups etc - and working with WECA to be able to neutrally discuss options in the very large area around Bristol, going as far down as Wells and up to Gloucester. It is mode and route neutral and apolitical.

This event is organized by the West of England Transport Association, in conjunction with The Bristol Civic Society, Bristol and Bath Area Trams Association, The Light Rail Transit Association, and other local groups. Also it is supported by Burges Salmon a leading Bristol Law firm.
