What the Butler Saw is a shocking, outrageous and hilarious farce, set in a private psychiatric hospital. It pokes fun at ‘The Establishment’, psychiatry and the police. It was Orton’s final and best farce, produced posthumously in 1969.Orton is seen as the ‘enfant terrible’ of the 60’s theatre and was labelled ‘The Oscar Wilde of the Welfare State”. He was an inspiration to writer like Alan Bennett, Ayckbourn and Pinter and his work was the forerunner of the Carry-On films and more modern work like Blackadder.
Performances are at 7.30pm nightly.
