Author Eilene Lyon will discuss her research on pioneer cemeteries on Thursday, October 9, as part of the free public speaker series organized by Glenwood Springs Historical Society.Lyon will talk about source materials and some of the stories she uncovered during the research for her second book, "What Lies Beneath Colorado: Pioneer Graveyards and Cemeteries," including some of the hidden personal trials and triumphs discovered in Colorado’s oldest cemeteries.
A resident of Durango, where she explores the San Juan Mountains for plants, animals, and history, Lyon writes regularly on her blog, Myricopia, and has published articles in local and regional genealogy and history magazines. She shares her passion for family history by giving presentations on history, research, writing, and genealogy to local, regional, and national audiences, helping others to know their ancestors with greater compassion and historical context.
Lyon has spent decades researching family histories to tell stories about the past. Her first book, Fortune’s Frenzy: A California Gold Rush Odyssey, revealed previously unknown aspects of the gold rush, was a Spur Awards finalist, and was awarded a Will Rogers Bronze medallion.
The free presentation begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 9, at the Glenwood Springs branch of Garfield County Public Libraries, at 815 Cooper Avenue.
The speaker series is presented in partnership with Garfield County Public Libraries and with the support of City of Glenwood Springs. Other presenters scheduled in the upcoming months include cave guide Khloe Everett speaking on the history of caves and caving in Colorado on November 8.
