Contact Improvisation (CI) is a physical and relational movement research practice. It was not codified, but the general agreement is that we are improvising while in contact. This workshop is open to all levels of experience; beginners are welcome and wanted! My proposal is to ground you in what CI is and provide you with the skills necessary for maintaining your safety and well-being. I've found there's a steep barrier to overcome as a beginner, and with good reason. CI asks us to confront our conditioning and reframe our thinking. We will explore CI through games and scores. We will debrief and talk about what we are doing. We'll end with 30 minutes of open jam time to integrate your learning. I am an avid dancer and mover, informed by many practices. My particular interest is in improvised dance, which I’ve been studying for over a decade. I have been dancing Contact Improvisation for three years, and teaching it for about a year and a half. Currently, I am deeply interested in studying my conditioning in relationship with others. We need each other to learn CI. And, can I be attentive to how I take the practice/inquiry of CI out of the studio and into everyday life? When I’m not dancing, I am an elementary music teacher. I’ve been teaching music to children since 2012.
