About this Event
What’s a Māori (vote) worth?
On Saturday 14th October 2023, hundreds of thousands of us will head down to polling booths and cast our votes in the general election. Some of us might even do so in the firm belief that our votes carry the same weight as everyone else’s. You know how the saying goes, ‘one man, one vote’. A recent law change will propel more Māori to cast votes, but Māori voter turnout overall will still be relatively low. Partly that’s because Māori do not believe their votes are worth as much as non-Māori votes. For most of the past 170 years they haven’t been. If you had no idea, you’re not alone.
Our guest speaker, Dr Simone Bull (creator of The Wall Walk), will expose this ‘blind spot’ in our collective memory and help us to see why it is so important that NZ history is starting to be taught in our schools. Along the way, she’ll explain the latent potential of the Māori seats in Parliament and some of the characters who have occupied them as we inch ever closer to constitutional reform. Long live democracy!
Please RSVP as a light breakfast and kawakawa tea will be served.
