Cartonera are small-scale publications with covers made from salvaged cardboard, each one printed, painted, and/or collaged by hand. The form originated in Argentina in the 1980s and has spread around the world, providing artists, storytellers, and poets with an alternative form of distribution and free or cheap access to their works for those who might not otherwise have it.
The Construction, Occupation exhibition presents the work of 24 contemporary artists and collectives, including cartonera by the Brazilian collective Dulcineia Catadora. This workshop with Cartonera Santanera is a full-body experience: their lino press cartonera covers are printed with custom presses that you rock, ride, and squeeze.
Children and adults will print and decorate their own cartonera covers, bind them together with a selection of children’s stories by local writers, and take home a unique memory of their visit to the museum.
Santanera Cartonera was established in 2012 as a publisher of poetry anthologies and other books. The collective has previously led workshops in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, including at UCLA.
Part of the "Being Human Festival US," running April 14–28, "Obscured Landmarks" is one of 16 community events across the country supported by the National Humanities Center. This festival celebrates the humanities’ ability to deepen our understanding of ourselves, connect us to each other, and shed light on today’s world.
