From the director: “Devising” has many definitions within theatre, but I favor how Tectonic Theatre Project puts it: the exploration of how theatre is created. The company began this project on May 27th with no script, characters or design elements in mind. As the director, all I knew is that I wanted to make a theatrical piece with superheroes. For several years, my husband, Ben, and I have created hundreds of characters and plot lines in the world of “re:INVENT”, a homebrew Dungeons and Dragons world Ben began building in 2016. In re:INVENT, inherent magic and scientific superpowers coexist, providing endless possibilities for new players to express themselves within this reimagined Earth. Whether you want to play a high elf who is an expert swordsman, a dragonborn who is a brilliant robotics engineer or a human cowboy who is good with a rifle, there is a place for everyone’s storytelling within re:INVENT. Since its conception, re:INVENT has been a fantastic tool for creating stories with those we love most through DnD campaigns, one-shots, film and audio drama scripts. For the first time, one of these stories is being brought to life on stage. It has been a joy to share my love of devised theatre and stage combat with local Lubbock talent and long-time Kansas City collaborators to construct WHAT IF? We can’t wait to share this brand new story with you!
Show Synopsis:
Deep in the dark and crime-ridden streets of Dustria City shines a solitary ray of hope for the innocent citizens seeking justice in the world. The teenage elf Perci fights crime by night as a confident vigilante with her powers of telekinesis, and attends high school by day as a busy and ambitious student with her powers of undiagnosed ADHD. One night, when her superpowered confidant, the villainous Andrew Blood, gives her a mysterious ring that will grant her a new superpower, her life sets a new course for danger which has her asking, "What if?" at every turn.
