Emily LaGratta (an expert on procedural fairness) and Renee
Danser (a researcher at Harvard's A2J Lab) will present their findings on the
study of the efficacy of remote versus in-person hearings in family law
cases. This was a randomized control trial where half of the cases on the
pro se calendar were conducted remotely, and half were
conducted in-person. Emily managed qualitative research and
Renee managed quantitative research. Research methodologies, the
importance of evidence-based practices in the law, and the findings will all be discussed.
The study has been running for nearly two years. After one year of
randomization and almost a full second year of observation, the final
findings of the study will be presented. Similar findings will be
presented to the full bench at the Judicial Conference in September.
Lunch will be provided.
