Learn about how senators in opposing parties worked together in the 1960s to pass legislation from civil rights to nuclear arms treaties.
About this Event

Join us for a conversation led by Steve Forrester with author Marc C. Johnson about his book, Mansfield and Dirksen: Bipartisan Giants in the Senate, exploring the unlikely cooperation between Senators Mark Mansfield, (D) Montana and Everett Dirksen, (R) Illinois in the 1960s. Mansfield and Dirksen passed landmark civil rights and voting rights legislation, created Medicare, and helped bring about a foundational nuclear arms limitation treaty.

Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Astor Library Friends Association. Author Marc C. Johnson will sign books after the event.
