Learn about the symbolic meanings of Lewisham's Imperial statues and explore the area's rich alternative history of resistance to racism.
About this Event

This free walking tour takes you on a journey through Lewisham that counterposes Lewisham’s rich history of struggles against racism with statues and symbols of empire. Lewisham abounds with naval symbols, from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, to the Anchor on Deptford Highstreet, to the statues of Sir Frances Drake, Horatio Nelson and Robert Blake on Deptford Town Hall. Less visible are the landmarks of resistance to racism. On this tour we will explore the meanings of figures connected to the slave trade and colonisation and ask why they came to be commemorated and we will visit sites of Lewisham’s alternative history of resistance and struggles for freedom.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 9–18 November 2023. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
