Join us for a unique weekend camp-out at Wirra-lo Wetlands, a 180-hectare nature reserve with 11 natural and 5 constructed wetlands at various stages of restoration. Over three days, participants will explore and share techniques in wetland vegetation restoration, including assisted natural regeneration, direct seeding, tubestock planting, transplanting, and biomass management methods such as fire and slashing.
The program blends hands-on practice, field walks, talks, and evening campfire discussions, offering a rare opportunity to deepen your understanding of wetland ecology while connecting with fellow bush regenerators in a relaxed, immersive setting.
Dates: Sat 1 – Mon 3 Nov 2025 (camping available Fri 31 Oct – Tues 4 Nov)Participants can arrive on Friday the 31st of October. Camping on the reserve will be available till Tuesday 4th of November, which is a public holiday in Victoria

Capacity: 80 people in total : 50 campers at Wirra-lo, 30 at overflow. (Overflow camp 5km away)
Local accommodation at Barham/Koondrook, Swan Hill and Kerang - all 20- 30 minutes away.
Getting there by public transport:
Closest bus station is Barham/Koondrook (20 min drive) and closest train station is Kerang (25 min drive)
Activities will include
*camp out with basic facilities provided including toilets, a simple bush kitchen and fireplace
*walks, talks and gawks of regenerating wetlands and surrounding floodplains
*practical activities including direct seeding and hand weeding
*campfire yarns
*a social evening
*swimming, relaxing and making merry
*opportunities for bird watching and nocturnal wildlife spotting, including endangered frogs
What to bring
*BYO stuff like binoculars and other field gear you need,
* PPE like sunhats and gaiters, gumboots /waders,
*food, some water if you can and
*camping gear (tents, cooking stuff) and
*canoes/kayaks (there should still be enough water to paddle in still by early November).
This event is co-hosted with the Wetland Revival Trust, a leading organisation dedicated to restoring and protecting wetland ecosystems. Funds raised will be shared between AABR Vic to support outreach events and the Wetland Revival Trust to support ongoing restoration efforts at Wirra-Lo.
