A short business meeting will be followed by a program examining the origin and local lore of Westport’s very own heirloom vegetable, the Macomber Turnip. In 1876, the Macomber brothers, Adin and Elihu, brought back seeds from the Philadelphia Exposition, and developed the unique hybrid vegetable that became known as the Macomber turnip. Join seed saver Bill Braun and other local farmers and historians to explore the origins of the turnip. Who were some of the local turnip seed keepers and growers? What is the best way to cook the Macomber turnip? Can the Macomber turnip grow beyond the borders of Westport? Is there truth to the farming tradition “wait ‘til they’ve been hit by three frosts to get the best flavor.” Bring along your favorite turnip recipes and any turnip stories! Suggested donation $5.
Co-sponsored by the Westport Historical Society and Westport Grange.
