Join our successful Go Sicily Travel Western Sicily and Egadi Islands 5-day tour by air!!!
Rich in culture, history and archaelogy, the province of Trapani occupies the westernmost part of Sicily and is a jewel waiting to be discovered. The landscape is varied and typically Mediterranean, with splendid beaches, seaside nature reserves and breathtaking panoramas. The province is known for its delicious food especially seafood, its wines which include the port wines of the Marsala area as also the full bodied wines of the Alcamo area and, last but not least, the friendliness and joie-de-vivre of the Trapanesi.
Our 5-day short break to Trapani province will enable our guests to explore and savour various nooks and crannies of this wonderful part of Sicily and to discover what makes Trapani one of the most beautiful provinces of our neighboring island.
On this tour, we will also be visiting the two picturesque islands of Favignana and Levanzo within the Egadi archipelago on a wonderful day cruise, during which we will also enjoy lunch on board a motor yacht.
Visiting:
Scopello, Castellammare del Golfo, Marsala, Mozia (including boat trip on the Riserva Naturale Orientata Laguna dello Stagnone), Erice, San Vito lo Capo, Favignana island, Levanzo island, Riserva Naturale Foce del Belice, Selinunte, Castelvetrano, Trapani
Tour programme
Tuesday 6 August 2024
Meet at 9:00am at Malta International Airport for check in and embarkation on Ryanair flight FR7005 to Trapani departing at 11:05am. Arrival in Trapani Birgi Vincenzo Florio Airport at 11:55am. On arrival, we will be met by our private coach and head towards Castellammare del Golfo, arriving there at around 1:00pm. Here we will be able to visit the historical centre of this fishermen's village known for its Madarig (literally "stairs" in Arabic, very similar to our own "tarag"), which lead from the pretty town centre to the beautiful promenade of Cala Marina, full of fish restaurants and boats. Free time, including free time for lunch (not included in tour price) in Castellammare del Golfo, where one can also take a close look at the medieval fortress from which the village takes its name, which literally means "Sea Fortress on the Gulf". At around 3:00pm, a short 20 minutes coach drive will then take us to Scopello. Here we will see the famous tonnara and have the opportunity to savour the magnificent and spectacular landscape which includes the Scopello fariglioni as also two medieval watch towers which make Scopello probably the nicest place by the sea in the whole of Sicily (closely followed in our opinion by the fishing village of Marzamemi near Siracusa and the awesome landscape of the Isola Bella near Taormina). The tonnara is where Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) accompanies Agent Isabel Lahiri (Catherine Zeta Jones) to meet her father Gasper LeMarque (Albert Finney) in the blockbuster Ocean’s Twelve (
). Our coach will then take us to the cute hamlet of Scopello, which was King Ferdinand's hunting base, just two kilometres uphill from the Tonnara, where we will be able to spend time exploring the picturesque alleyways, main square and historical centre of this pretty and tranquil hamlet. Here we will have time to enjoy an icecream, aperitif or coffee (not included in tour price) at one of the various outdoor cafeterias in the area. Late afternoon departure to Selinunte, arriving at our Hotel, the 4**** Hotel Admeto one hour later. Check in and allocation of rooms. Free time, followed by dinner at the Hotel.
Wednesday 7 August 2024
Buffet breakfast at the Hotel, followed by departure at around 9:00am to
Marsala. Marsala has been known for its dessert wine and liquer which bears its name since the time of the American Civil War of 1776, when John Whittaker set off from Liverpool to establish what was to become a centuries-old tradition of Marsala wine. Marsala is also known as the place from where the much-revered Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi started his crusade to unite Italy into one nation more than 160 years ago. Here we will visit one of the major wineries, before proceeding to the cute historical centre, starting with a wine tasting session at a local wine shop (included in the tour price). We will then proceed on a walking tour of the historical centre, visiting various places of interest including the main gate at Porta Garibaldi, the Corso, the Cathedral and other attractions. Free time in Marsala for personal sightseeing and possibly some shopping from the high street shops, as also free time for lunch. After lunch we will head to the famous Salt pans of Mozia where we will enjoy a very tranquil atmosphere in the area of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Laguna dello Stagnone di Marsala, with fantastic views over the three Egadi islands of Favignana, Marittimo and Levanzo. Following a short break for a coffee or a beer, we will embark on a 45-minute boat trip (included in the tour price) on the Laguna, with commentary in English. During our boat trip, we will sail close to the four islands on the Laguna, namely Mozia, Scola, Isola Lunga (or Isola Grande) and Isola Santa Maria and also be able to see the Punic Road which was built more than 2000 years ago to link the island of Mozia with the mainland. Late afternoon departure towards our hotel in Selinunte, followed by free time during which one can go to the beach, which is just 3 minutes walk from the Hotel, for a swim or to have a pre-dinner aperitif from one of the many bars on the seafront. Evening dinner at the Hotel.
Thursday 8 August 2024
Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by departure from the hotel. Today we will enjoy an optional cruise on board a 150-seater motor boat to visit the two Egadi islands of Favignana and Levanzo (optional at €75 per person including lunch on board the boat). On arrival in Favignana, we will have the opportunity to swim in the turquoise sea along the coast, prior to disembarking at the port where we will have free time, during which one can explore the town of Favignana. Here one can also visit the liberty-style Palazzo Florio, home of the famous Florio family which is now a museum, as also the iconic Tonnara di Favignana, which in its heydeys used to employ more than 1000 persons in the fishing of tuna and production of various tuna-related foods. In the afternoon, we will board the boat for lunch (included im the excursion price), following which we will depart towards the island of Levanzo. This island will welcome us with its whitewashed houses with blue apertures, to the extent that we get the feeling that we are arriving at some secluded Greek island. Free time in Levanzo during which one can explore the rugged coastline, possibly enjoying a dip in the tuquoise sea or settle for a long drink or an ice-cream at one of the seafront bars in the village. Late afternoon departure by boat to our port of departure, where we will find our coach waiting for us to take us to our hotel. Free time at the hotel, followed by dinner at the Hotel. Those who opt not to take the full day optional excursion today can spend the day at one of the beach lidos in Selinunte, located within ten minutes walk from the Hotel.
Friday 9 August 2024
Buffet breakfast at the hotel, followed by departure to Erice, arriving there mid-morning. Erice is located on top of Monte San Giuliano at around 750 metres above sea level and enjoys breathtaking views over the city of Trapani, the low western coast towards Marsala, the dramatic Punta del Saraceno and San Vito Lo Capo as also the three Egadi Islands of Levanzo, Favignana and Marittimo. We will have time to explore the historical centre of this medieval walled town and admire the fantastic views from various vantage points in Erice, including the imposing Castello di Venere. A visit to our friend, Maria Grammatico, in her dolceria in Erice is a must: here one can taste the delicious "lingua della suocera" (mother-in-law's tongue), a Cassata Siciliana, a Genovese, a cassatella or one of the various pastries which Maria and her team produce on site in her bakery. Free time to stroll along the cute alleyways in Erice and also to pick up some souvenirs from the many souvenir shops. Free time for lunch (not included in tour price) in Erice. After lunch, we will depart to San Vito lo Capo, a journey which will allow us to enjoy the panoramic beauty of the turquoise waters and the mountains which adorn this little coastal village which is renowned for its annual Cus Cus festival in September. Free time to enjoy the historical centre or to have a dip in the beautiful waters. Late afternoon departure to Selinunte. Free time followed by dinner at the Hotel.
Saturday 10 August 2024
Buffet breakfast at the Hotel. Today we will have late check out at 12:30pm from the Hotel. This morning, we will be free to enjoy the fishing village of Selinunte. One can choose to go on a visit to the spectacular Selinunte Archaeological Park, which is Europe’s largest archaeological park. This area is endowed with various world famous temples and other structures dating to the time of the Greek period, around two thousand five hundred years ago. One can also opt to go for a swim or settle for an ice-cream or drink down at the port. You may also visit the Riserva Naturale Orientata Foce del Belice, located just 15 minutes walk from the Hotel.
