Wichita Grand Opera invites you to experience the timeless romance and enduring tale of West Side Story—a contemporary reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, set amid the vibrant and electrifying rhythms of 1950s New York City. This semi-staged production features an extraordinary cast from across the country, joined by a talented ensemble of local artists and the Wichita Grand Opera Orchestra. Also featured is the Melonlight Dance Theater of Eureka Springs, AR and spearheaded by co-directors Emily and Raymond Ulibarri, who bring their artistry to Wichita, infusing the production with sizzling dance and boisterous movement throughout.
Under the direction of Stage Director JJ Hudson (Artistic Director of Opera at the Cleveland Institute of Music) and Conductor William Lumpkin (Artistic Director and Conductor of the Boston University Opera Institute), the tragic love story of Tony and Maria is brought to life by Italian-American tenor Eric Botto and Cuban-American soprano Shannon Jennings, who returns to WGO following her exquisite portrayal of Rusalka in Dvořák’s Rusalka last fall.
