"Iolanthe" is a whimsical operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan that tells the story of a fairy named Iolanthe who is banished from fairyland for marrying a mortal. After spending centuries underwater to avoid her fellow fairies, she returns to the mortal world to reunite with her son Strephon, who is a shepherd and half-fairy. Complicating matters is the fact that Strephon is in love with Phyllis, a ward of the Lord Chancellor.
As Strephon tries to win Phyllis's hand in marriage, he faces opposition from the House of Lords, who are also vying for her affections. Meanwhile, the Queen of the Fairies and her retinue join the fray, causing chaos and confusion among both the mortal and fairy worlds.
Through a series of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and comedic twists, the characters navigate the complexities of love, politics, and societal expectations. Ultimately, true love triumphs, and harmony is restored between the fairies and the mortals, with a touch of satire and wit characteristic of Gilbert and Sullivan's works.
