"Iolanthe" is a whimsical operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan that tells the story of a fairy named Iolanthe who is banished from fairyland for marrying a mortal. After spending centuries underwater to avoid her fellow fairies, she returns to the mortal world to reunite with her son Strephon, who is a shepherd and half-fairy. Complicating matters is the fact that Strephon is in love with Phyllis, a ward of the Lord Chancellor.As Strephon tries to win Phyllis's hand in marriage, he faces opposition from the House of Lords, who are also vying for her affections.
