About this Event
The West End Neighborhoods History & Culture Tour was organized to share the rich history, places, people, culture, and vibrancy of the West End community. Library and Internet research, resident engagements (current and former), community meetings and forums, and social media were utilized to gain the past and current insights shared throughout the tour.
The West End community is a fascinating place – to live, to learn, to worship, to work, to visit and enjoy. A community comprising of nine unique and vibrant neighborhoods: Russell, Portland, Shawnee, Chickasaw, Parkland, Park DuValle, Algonquin, California, and Park Hill.
West End neighborhoods feature an aesthetically assortment of structures, buildings and housing stock. Scenic parks and public spaces. An area richly connected to Civil Rights icons and sports greats. The West End is a community of supportive residents, churches, institutions, organizations and businesses.
Donovan Taylor is the Tour organizer and conductor. A West End community native and resident committed to collaborating with neighbors, community groups and stakeholders to advance quality of life initiatives. An enthusiast of local history and culture.
In 2012, in collaboration with Outdoor Afros Louisville, Donovan first organized the Chickasaw Neighborhood History Hike, a walking tour exploring the history, landmarks, amenities, developments, and stories of Chickasaw. A 3.5-mile, approximately 2 hour, walking tour through and about the neighborhood.
In 2023, Donovan was awarded the Filson Community History Fellowship, a program sponsored by the Filson Historical Society designed to support community history by awarding local creatives support and resources for artistic research and inspiration. Donovan was inspired to broaden and establish the West Louisville Neighborhood History Tour to feature the dynamic history of all ten neighborhoods that make up the West End Community.
