The recipient of the 2022 Graham F Smith Peace Award for an Artist in Residence will be presented at the keynote address.
About the keynote
The Arts touch people deeply by telling stories that bind us and help us understand different cultural reference points. Often as artists, we downplay our influence, preferring to think of arts as a luxury transaction rather than a fundamental to the functioning of a healthy society.
The Arts have healing properties to create empathy-building opportunities, explore problem-solving options, challenge the status quo, empower the minority or distract you for a moment in times of hardship or trauma.
The saying “to make your mark” means leaving an impression or affecting an outcome. To build a stronger society and a more humane and peaceful community, we must find more ways to leave a positive mark.
Climate Change, The Voice to Parliament, disadvantage and poverty need to be addressed not only through political constructs but also through the cultural – artists taking up the challenge to be relevant and engaged in the aspirations of a community. Making Marks that can bring about change.
The keynote will be followed by a Q+A led by Associate Professor Simone Ulalka Tur, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Indigenous), Flinders University. Internationally-recognised choreographer and director Garry Stewart will MC the evening.

Funds raised at this event will support the Graham F Smith Peace Award for an Artist in Residence at Assemblage, Flinders University’s Centre for Creative Arts.
