Welsh Not - Elementary Education and the Anglicisation of Wales

Join Prof. Martin Johnes as he discusses his new book, ‘Welsh Not
Elementary Education and the Anglicisation of Wales’. The Welsh Not was a wooden token given to children caught speaking Welsh in nineteenth-century schools. It was often accompanied by corporal punishment and is widely thought to have been responsible for the decline of the Welsh language. Despite having an iconic status in popular understandings of Wales’ history, there has never before been a study of where, when and why the Welsh Not was used.
Martin Johnes is Professor of Modern History at Swansea University, and one of Wales’s best-known historians. He is the author of a series of books on Welsh history, including ‘Wales: England’s Colony?’, which was adapted into a BBC television series.
This event will be held in person at Glamorgan Archives.
**********
Ymunwch a’r Athro Martin Johnes wrth iddo drafod ei lyfr newydd, ‘Welsh Not
Elementary Education and the Anglicisation of Wales’. Tocyn pren oedd y Welsh Not a roddwyd i blant cafodd eu dal yn siarad Cymraeg yn ysgolion y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Yn aml aeth law yn llaw a chosb gorfforol a chredwyd yn eang yr arweiniodd at ddirywiad yr iaith Gymraeg. Er bod gan y Welsh Not statws eiconig o fewn dealltwriaeth boblogaidd o hanes Cymru, ni chyflawnwyd astudiaeth hyd at hyn ar ble, pryd a pham ei ddefnyddiwyd.
Mae Martin Johnes yn Athro yn Hanes Modern ym Mhrifysgol Abertawe ac yn un o haneswyr mwyaf adnabyddus Cymru. Efe yw awdur cyfres o lyfrau ar hanes Cymru, gan gynnwys ‘Wales: England’s Colony?’, cafodd ei addasu i gyfres teledu i’r BBC.
Bydd y digwyddiad yma yn cael ei chynnal mewn person yn Archifau Morgannwg.
