Wellington City Council, Ngaio Going Carbon Neutral and Pedal Ready are teaming up to run social bike tours of the recent street changes in Ngaio and the surrounding area. Build confidence and skills to travel safely and efficiently by paihikara (bike) while getting to know the bike improvements in Ngaio! The ride will finish at Ngaio Union Church, where there will be the monthly Repair Cafe that runs till 1pm for those who want to attend. A good excuse to bring a friend and get your belongings repaired!
Please allow 2 hours for the ride. Arrive 30 minutes early if you are renting a bike.
These rides are suitable for people who:
- Know how to ride a bike but aren't yet travelling by bike in the city; or
- Those travelling by bike in the city but would like to gain confidence; or
- Those who want to learn how to use new infrastructure.
Open to riders aged 18+ (or 13+ if accompanied by an adult). Families are also welcome to bring younger children on cargo bikes or bike seats provided themselves. Please enquire directly with Switched on Bikes if you'd like to borrow a bike seat for the tour.
An electric bike is strongly recommended to participate in this ride. Thanks to Switched on Bikes and Wellington City Council, you can rent an electric bike for just $10 if you don't have access to one. Please book that separately here:

You can either leave the bike with us after the tour and make your own way home (the 25, 26 bus and Johnsonville train depart regularly to the city). If you're feeling extra enthusiastic and want to extend your ride on Saturday, you're welcome to hold onto the bike and return it before 5pm. You would be charged with an additional $15 for half-day hire, and you can decide what you'd like to do as late as the end of the guided ride on Friday.
If you would like to learn to ride a bike away from the road, check out the free Pedal Ready courses on their website. Any pātai (questions) about these tours please get in contact: [email protected].
This ride is also a great way to participate in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge during February. Sign up, log your rides, encourage your friends and be in the draw to win great prizes! Find out more on the Aotearoa Bike Challenge website https://www.lovetoride.net/nz.
