Wellness Walks in Wildlife-MOT
Evergreens & Winter Berries
Michelle Obama Trail
Wednesday, December 21, 2025 | 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
As winter settles over the landscape, the forest reveals the quiet strength of its evergreen elders and the bright generosity of its winter-fruiting plants. These species anchor the ecosystem when sunlight is thin and resources are scarce—offering shelter, structure, and steady nourishment to birds, mammals, and countless smaller forms of life. During this walk we’ll explore how evergreens moderate the cold, how berries sustain wildlife through the lean season, and how both shape the winter rhythm of our parks. A calm pace, thoughtful conversation, and space to notice what endures when the forest rests.
Accessibility & Site Conditions
All South DeKalb Parks Naturalist programs are designed to be welcoming, supportive, and accessible to participants of varying ages, abilities, and mobility levels. Trailheads and meeting points are selected for safe entry, stable footing, and reasonable access.
We will begin at the GSU Panthersville Road trailhead, where parking and trail access are on level ground. The Michelle Obama Trail is predominantly paved along this section and generally supports walkers, strollers, and mobility aids. Our planned route may include crossing three boardwalk bridges, each with secure guardrails and stable walking surfaces.
Restrooms
Please note that there are no restrooms at this site, so participants should plan accordingly.
If you have mobility, balance, or pacing considerations—or would like to discuss alternate route options—please contact me in advance. Our naturalist team is committed to working with participants to ensure a safe, meaningful, and accessible outdoor experience.
Weather & Safety
Programs proceed in light weather and are adjusted only when conditions are unsafe. Participants should dress for the day’s conditions and bring any assistive devices or supports they need.
