About this Event

Do you still remember the quarantine station for immigrants? Or the rickety railway tracks used for transporting luggage to the barracks? Take a stroll around the idyllic St John’s island with these ex-residents as they bring you on an intimate adventure around their childhood playground.

Meet Adam!

Hello everyone, I am Adam and I was born on St John’s Island! I relocated to the mainland in 1987 but I still return to the island frequently to relive those good old days. On the island, I often reminisce about my days selling goreng pisang (fried banana) to the detention barrack officers and the many exciting things my childhood friends and I would do on the island. From making pickles with the fruits of the Assam tree to our failed attempts to grow durian on the island, the island is a treasure trove of fond memories for me that I am able to relive again and again with each visit. For those who say that home is where the heart is, my heart is in St John’s Island.

Meet Rahim!

Hi everyone, I am Rahim! I was also born on St John’s Island but relocated to Bukit Merah in 1975. On the island, I lived in the barrack houses with my father who was a wireman and my grandfather who was a gardener. Even in this place of military discipline, my friends and I had our fair share of fun. We would climb to the highest point in St John’s (at the water tanks!) and slide down the slope at the same time on the humongous opeh leaf! And after a day of play, we would head to my favourite place which is the shop to get drinks and ice cream.

Today, St John’s Island continues to be a place for my friends and me to make good memories. Instead of sliding down slopes, we fish and picnic on the island. Even though this place has experienced much change and the houses and shops are now gone, the one thing that hasn’t changed is how we, the islanders, feel about this island. It’s our home.
