"Welcome to Liminal Land", An art exhibit featuring 6 Colorado artists who 'play' with the elements of the familiar and de-familiarize while exploring the betwixt and between. liminal /lĭm′ə-nəl/ adjective Liminal is a word for the in-between. It describes states, times, spaces, that exist at a point of change—a metaphorical threshold—as in “the liminal zone between sleep and wakefulness.” The word’s root is Latin: limen, meaning “threshold.” Art and the liminal: “The recombination of elements is a quality also found in altered, (i.e. deconstructed) states of consciousness. Odd assortments of items appear in dreams & in productions of visionary artists. This is perhaps the essence of creativity - producing new patterns, new ways of seeing the world. It is the analysis of the culture into factors & re-combinations in any & every possible pattern, however weird, that is of the essence of liminality.” Culture and the liminal: “Transitions occur in all societies, from those of thousands of years ago to our own. Whether dramatic & full blown, or relatively mild & limited, cultural change and revitalization are complex processes, but they have commonalities. Aspects of liminality & anti-structure are seen in them. There is often a loss of faith in the established order. Those on the margins are likely to be the first to suffer from the problems of incipient change. Their protests can induce the establishment to try to further marginalize and discredit them. As a crisis progresses, corruption & deceit in the establishment leads to further distrust. Individuals abandon their old ways of doing things & look for new ones. Those under stress may drastically alter their lifestyles & accept a change in status. Paranormal & supernatural become prominent during times of transition. Charismatic leaders may arise who demonstrate paranormal powers, attracting followers, & challenging the legitimacy of the establishment. Whether within individuals, small tribes, or large cultures, the same pattern is found.” -Quotes from The Trickster and the Paranormal by George P Hansen
