'Welcome Notes? Music for Children living in Direct Provision' talk with Dr Ailbhe Kenny, Mary Immaculate College
About this Event

There has been limited attention given to children as they navigate new and temporary spaces within Direct Provision. Their music-making is one lived and embodied experience within these contexts. This talk draws on multiple studies and projects about children’s musical participation while living through the asylum seeking system. The importance of providing access to the arts, facilitating cultural expression and identity negotiation, as well as opening up opportunities for creating a sense of community and belonging through music is highlighted. The talk and discussion offers a means to gain insights and deepened understanding of these complex child experiences. In particular, ways forward for educational and community approaches to this work will be discussed.

Dr Ailbhe Kenny is a Lecturer in Music Education at MIC, Limerick.

Booking required.

Please note that people wishing to attend this talk will be required to show covid vaccine certs.

This talk is part of the talks programme for the Hiwa K exhibition 'Do you remember what you are burning?', 7 October 2021 - 13 February 2022.
