A weekend of West African deliciousness in the youth hostel in the beautiful shining Cliffs woods near Ambergate (Derbyshire). Led by Moussa Sylla we'll explore the 'Musicale' (as opposed to the more commonly taught 'Ballet') style of playing. Using balafon, krin, djembe, gongo and bolon we'll explore the parts for a couple of Guinean rhythms and look at how they can be combined. This can then feed into your general playing as well as being a 'stand alone' weekend of learning.Djembe for 'musicale' has a very different feel to 'ballet' style playing so you'll develop your technique, particularly your sensitivity/tonality; and it's relational to the other instruments so opens up a whole new dimension. Bring your own drum but all other instruments will be provided (bring your own if you have a personal balla /gongo etc and want to use that).
Depending on participants' preference we'll concentrate on 3/4 instruments but you'll get a chance to try everything. Moussa will demonstrate and also play for you Fri and Sat evenings too. Musicale is his area of expertise and he's played in a variety of groups all over Senegal/Gambia as well as on the Toumaranke debut album, which is a great example of what musicale is.
the workshop will be small as the hostel only has 20 beds, so 18 people maximum, not suitable for total beginners although if you're a musician and not familiar with w African music that'd be ok. Arrival anytime after 5 on fri, all food for sat and sun lunch included. You can stay on for sunday night for an extra £40 if you don't want to drive after such a full day. We'll be staying so it'd give you a bit more 'hanging out' time.
I'm really looking forward to this as it's been a long time and I'm hoping that maybe twice a year will become a regular event.
Earlybird price - pay in full before 18th Oct, £260, or £290 after that. 1 concessionary place available so contact me re that if you're struggling financially. More info to follow or feel free to ring for a chat.
