Based in studio, working from a live still life set up, this masterclass taught by Caitlin Heslop - associate artist with Unison Colour soft pastels, is perfect for priming beginner to intermediate creatives for soft pastel mastery. Caitlin’s tuition over the course of the weekend will give you a detailed understanding of mark making techniques, drawing from observation, how to use tone and tonal range, selecting colour palettes, creating an intentional composition, and finding your own voice.
Day 1: Students will begin being guided through warm up exercises, line drawings and preparatory studies, and then will pause a moment to gain inspiration from some of the great masters and contemporary artists. Students will then learn how to transform line studies into the 3D form of an object. Caitlin will then guide students through a sustained observational drawing before preparing you to draw a still life. Building upon the principles covered in the morning. Students will take inspiration from artists’ to create a Still Life drawing that celebrates line, colour and mark making. This will be an opportunity for students to ‘make their work their own’ by considering what aspects of artist inspirations each students want to carry forward. The session will end with an opportunity for students to see one another’s work, and to talk about techniques that worked or didn’t work as well. This is a great way to progress, and many individuals find that it helps to see their work in a new way when they have the positive feedback of their peers.
“Celebrate Line, mark making and colour, in Unison Soft Pastel, create your own compositions, find your artistic voice”!
Day 2: Sunday morning will provide an opportunity to explore colour palettes and composition. Student’s will also be taught about how to create an intentional composition from the set up before them. Sunday’s afternoon session will be a time to complete your masterclass final piece. Student’s will be encouraged to think about their choice of colours, composition and mark making. Caitlin will circulate to give one to one feedback and support where needed. The weekend masterclass will end with an opportunity to circulate and enjoy one another’s work.
