Dave Killgore: Still Strumming Strong After More Than 40 Years in the Music BusinessDave is a seasoned professional bass player, Dave's journey through the corridors of country music as well as rock-n-roll as a professional bass player has brought him great joy and satisfaction. His love of 70's and 80's rock and folk rock has now turned into a side project as a solo acoustic artist.
Dave is a musician known for his profound love for music and for being the steady foundation for country bands on the bass guitar. Born and raised in a family where music was not just entertainment, but a way of life, he developed an affinity for melodies and rhythms at an early age. He worked and honed his skills over time, establishing himself as a notable bass player in the Wichita music scene; particularly during the country music resurgence of the 80s and 90s. Dave's passion for music was ignited by his grandfather and uncles, as well as his brothers who were local musicians and great teachers. The young Dave would sit and listen, soaking in the melodies and the emotions that each strum evoked. As he grew older, his interest in music broadened and he began to learn to play guitar. While he is still a student of the instrument, he is learning more each day to become more proficient and versatile in his playing style.
Dave’s journey as a bass player began in his early teens when he picked up the bass. Since his older brothers played guitar and drums it seemed like the most logical thing to do. The deep, resonating sounds struck a chord within him, and he was hooked. With consistent practice and an insatiable thirst to learn, he mastered the basics and started experimenting with different styles and techniques. Over time, his skills caught the attention of local bands like the Slate Creek Band and the Ark Valley Boys, which paved his way into the professional music scene. As a bass player, Dave brought a unique flavor to every performance and blended his love of music with his knack for creating compelling bass lines. Over the past 20 years he has played with local favorites Mike Love, David Holland, Adam Capps and now with his son, Kyle Killgore. Dave was close to retiring as a musician a few years ago, but his love of performing was ignited again when his son, Kyle, decided he was going to start a band and begin his music career. What started his love of music with his grandfather is now being carried on through his boys and the passion continues.
Acoustic music holds a special place in Dave's heart. His interest in this genre began in his childhood and has grown over the years. The simplicity, rawness, and intimacy offered by acoustic music have always resonated with his artistic sensibility.
Despite being immersed in the world of country music, Dave never lost his love for acoustic music and rock and roll music from the 70’s and 80’s. His favorite songs from that era include classics like 'Simple Man’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Houses' by John Mellencamp’ and 'Turn the Page' by Bob Seger. These songs, according to Dave, encapsulate the true essence of his love for the sound of the 70s — they are raw, heartfelt, and deeply emotive. He often performs these songs during his shows.
Looking back at Dave's career, one cannot help but see his dedication and unwavering love for music. His journey from a young boy fascinated by the melodies of an acoustic guitar to becoming a respected professional bass player has been full of dedication and hard work, but ultimately worth every effort. Over the years, he has evolved his style to stay relevant in the ever-changing music industry, all while staying true to his roots.
