About this Event

To secure a place at this event, registration is required. Please make sure ALL fields are filled out on the registration form and a confirmation email is received.

Canyon Hill Cemetery is a peaceful refuge for a variety of bird species throughout the year. We will be looking for wintering birds such as Brown Creepers, Kinglets, Chickadees, Crossbills, Cedar Waxwings, and other songbirds. The cemetery has scenic overlooks of the Boise River and farming fields that often have ducks, turkeys, and geese. We may get lucky and spot a wintering Merlin or Saw-Whet Owl.
We'll be walking along paved but uneven single lane roads, as well as unpaved paths along the canyon rim, and the grass between headstones. The outside edges on the east and north are unpaved and could contain goatheads, but provide the best views of the farm fields.

We will need to keep an eye out for any vehicles driving on the roads, and parents must ensure their children stay back from the edges of the bluff as there are no barriers. The cemetery is located on a bluff and the winds can be fairly strong and cold.
This trip is suitable for birders of all levels. Participants younger than 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants younger than 18 must have a parent/guardian sign the liability release.
Binoculars will be available if needed.

Time: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
We will meet in the vacant parking lot along the north side of Savannah Street. Additional parking can be found along Savannah if the lot is full. Please note, there may be highway construction which may require taking an alternate route to reach the cemetery.
What to bring: Bring warm layers for weather, closed toe shoes, binoculars and some water. A spotting scope will be available, but please feel free to bring your own.

Please dress for the weather. If there is heavy snow or steady rain forecast, the trip will be cancelled. If precipitation is light or intermittent, the walk will proceed.

No dogs please.
Restroom availability: There is a restroom at the cemetery entrance. If it is unavailable, there the Maverick Station close to the interstate.
Contact information: Please text trip leader, Jordan Bates, at 208-391-8338 with any questions.
