Come on out for our Wednesday Night Beginner Bellydance Class with Safiya 6:00 to 7:00 PM This NEW Session we are going to be working through a fun, flirty, and exciting Beginner Level Egyptian Sha'abi Choreography.
Wednesdays April 12 to May 17!
Please Note, as this is a choreography session: After April 19th, drop ins & new students will need to wait to join in the next session.
ALL LEVELS of students are welcome!
But are recommended to not miss more than one class, as we are progressing each week further along in the choreo.
Each class will include basic bellydance moves in the warm ups. Then some drills of moves and combos we will use in the choreo, and time to practice them with our selected song.
Each week students will move a little further forward with the choreo.
At the end of the session, students who are interested will get a chance to perform this choreo at some upcoming events!
What IS SHA'ABI??
Sha'abi is a style of music and dance that has ancient roots in the folkloric traditions of rural Egypt, but which developed in the urban working-class neighborhoods of Egypt.
Shaabi means popular to the people, it is the music of the working class in Egypt and the lyrics of shaabi songs are usually about politics, personal life or love (often quite explicit).
Sometimes lyrics can even be total nonsense, such as the colour of grapes or loosing glasses; in one instance a Viagra type company used it for an advert and nowadays the emphasis is on DJ mixes.
Shaabi is often danced in Egyptian nightclubs like our western pop music is danced socially in the west.
