The goal: to reflect the global experience of prosecuting genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity and applying this experience to crimes committed by the Russian regime and soldiers in Ukraine. Also to compare the legal paths taken by Lithuania and Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR, seeking justice for crimes - genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and other repressions related to military actions and political violence - that were carried out and continue to occur in these countries during the 20th and 21st centuries. The objective of this webinar is to analyze and compare Lithuania's and Ukraine's legal strategies aimed at seeking justice for victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and political repressions, and to suggest possible improvements to these strategies. Additionally, the webinar aims to examine the role played by historical memory in the selection of these legal paths in Lithuania and Ukraine (and whether it can be considered a factor that has or continues to influence transitional justice in both countries).
Target audience: students, scholars, victims of Soviet crimes, NGO‘ s dealing with Soviet crimes, policy makers in the region and beyond, also victims of Russian war in Ukraine and thos active in seeking justice for them.
