“Many moons ago, in a far-off place, lived a handsome prince with a gloomy face.” But worry not, for the Weber Middle School Drama Club is about to bring some royal fun to the stage with their upcoming production of Once Upon a Mattress! This hilarious and heartwarming musical, known for its witty humor and charming songs, will have audiences laughing as they witness a princess who is anything but “Shy.”A delightful retelling of The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress follows Princess Winnifred (or Fred, as she prefers) as she swims the moat—yes, she swims the moat!—to prove she is worthy of marrying the overly sheltered Prince Dauntless. His overbearing mother, Queen Aggravain, has decreed that no one in the kingdom may wed until her son finds a suitable bride. But with a test as absurd as sleeping on twenty mattresses stacked high with a single pea underneath, the Queen has ensured that no princess will ever pass. That is, until the unconventional and spirited Winnifred arrives to shake up the kingdom!
First performed in 1959, Once Upon a Mattress was a breakout role for Carol Burnett, who played Princess Winnifred in the original Broadway production. Since then, it has become a favorite for theater lovers of all ages, thanks to its clever script, catchy songs, and timeless humor. The show has been revived numerous times, including a 2005 TV adaptation, and a recent 2024 Broadway revival starring Sutton Foster as Winnifred.
The Weber Middle School Drama Club is thrilled to present two stellar casts (containing over 120 students in the cast, stage crew, and pit orchestra) for this production. The Carol Burnett cast will perform on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. and March 22 at 2:00 p.m., while the Sutton Foster Cast will take the stage on March 22 at 7:30 p.m. and March 23 at 2:00 p.m. Weber Middle School’s production of Once Upon a Mattress is directed by Weber English teacher Mrs. Stacey Portmore-Davies, musically directed by Weber music teacher Mrs. Allison Friedman, and choreographed by Ms. Suz Dervish-Ali.
Tickets are $11 online/$10 at the door for adults, $8 online/$7 at the door for students (K-12) and senior citizens (65+), and children five and under are free!
