As writers, we can take our artistry to the next level through professional development. It takes determination and skill to take ourselves seriously as artists, especially when many aspects of the professional writing world are shrouded in mystery. “Weaving the Threads” is a series of workshops designed to support the professional development of women writers of color. During these Sunday workshops in June, we will delve into the ins-and-outs of the writing world.
The series includes four workshops and is lead by BIPOC women poets and writers, Sayuri Ayers, Ruth Awad, Ajanaé Dawkins, and Karen Scott. Each workshop runs from 1-4 pm on consecutive Sundays in June 2024. The facilitated workshop time will be 2 ½ hours with time afterwards to network with your cohort.
The four workshops are:
6/2 Describing Your Work: Creating an Artist Statement and CV: Facilitated by Sayuri Ayers
6/9 Publishing Your Work: Submitting to Journals/Presses: Facilitated by Ajanaé Dawkins
6/16 Funding Your Work: Applying for Grants and Residencies: Facilitated by Ruth Awad
6/23 Finding Your Community: Connecting to local/regional writing communities, conferences, and workshops: Facilitated by Sayuri Ayers and Karen Scott
Participants can expect to come away from the series with a draft of an artist statement and CV, understanding of the submission and grant-writing process, and ways to connect with local community.
Eligibility:
“Weaving the Threads” is open only to women writers of color. This series would be most helpful to an emerging writer with a publication history or a creative portfolio and who is actively working on a project. Writers should also have the desire to take the next steps in their professional lives as artists.
The workshop size is limited to 10 participants.
Cost:
The cost of the Weaving the Threads series is $225 plus tax for all four workshops.
The first six writers to purchase the workshop series will receive a one hour Zoom consultation with Sayuri Ayers to discuss the writers’ artist statement, CV, set of three pieces, or grant/residency application at no extra charge.
