About this Event

Discussion led by clinical health psychologist, Dr. Cynthia O. Townsend, Ph.D., ABPP specializes in chronic pain and chronic pain rehabilitation. Dr. Townsend's clinical focus includes:

  • Functional restoration through intensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation while minimizing polypharmacy
  • Addressing psychological comorbidities in the context of debilitating chronic complex medical conditions
  • Delivering cognitive behavioral therapy for management of chronic pain
  • Promoting wellness and a holistic approach to empower individuals with chronic pain syndromes, and their family members and supporters

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Townsend has been active in interdisciplinary rehabilitation treatment outcome research.

Dr. Townsend is the clinical director of the Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center (PRC) program in Arizona.

This program aims to empower individuals to navigate and mitigate the impacts of somatic trauma response and weathering within their cultural and racial contexts effectively. Through education, skill-building, and community support, participants are encouraged to cultivate resilience and adopt strategies that enhance their overall well-being in the face of adversity. This holistic approach underscores the importance of integrating somatic awareness with cultural sensitivity to foster long-term healing and empowerment among participants.

  1. Become familiar with the concepts of weathering and somatic trauma response and how they relate to personal well-being and any associated barriers.
  2. Identify how to implement somatic skills to increase awareness of difficult racial and cultural situations.
  3. Foster a sense of community and belonging among participants, promoting long-term resilience and effective well-being strategies.
