NEW 2K RESTORATION! This August, We Really Like Her! co-hosts Emily and Danita invite you to have a one-night stand with Nancy Savoca’s unsung coming-of-age romance Dogfight (1991).
Taking place over the course of a fateful day in 1963, Dogfight follows Rose (Lili Taylor), a waitress with folk music dreams who gets asked on a last-minute date by a U.S. marine (River Phoenix as Eddie). Little does she know she’s about to be a guest of honour at a pathetic party designed to give a cash prize to the guy with the “ugliest date.”
Although it kicks off with a cruel prank, this bittersweet slice of mid-century American life quickly turns into a love story as the mismatched duo ditch the “dogfight” and actually get to know each other. It helps that Taylor and Phoenix share an effortless chemistry, which is further enhanced by the film’s nostalgic soundtrack (cue Joan Baez's "Silver Dagger") and Savoca's soft, sweet direction.
