About this Event
Bicycle Sundays is a longstanding tradition in Westchester County where a 6.5-mile stretch of the historic Bronx River Parkway is closed to cars and opened to cyclists and pedestrians! WE Bike NYC is partnering with American Planning Association - New York Metro chapter’s Transportation Committee to offer a guided bike tour of the Bronx River Parkway with optional ride to and from NYC. The tour will focus on the history of the parkway and park system, as well as the transportation infrastructure. The tour will be led by Barbara Davis, Co-Director of the Westchester County Historical Society and David Delucia, who recently retired as the Director of Park Facilities for the County of Westchester. After completing the loop of the Bronx River Parkway we’ll stop for lunch in Crestwood.
Please note the different start options:
Option 1: If you’d like to ride from the city, meet us in the Bronx just inside the entrance to Van Cortlandt Park, at Broadway & 242nd St. (near the 1 train station) at 9am (wheels down at 9:15am). We’ll take the Old Putnam Trail to the South County Trail, then connect to the Bronx River Trail via about a mile on Palmer Rd., a midsize suburban road. If you start in the Bronx and ride round trip with us, the whole ride will be about 30 miles. There is one big hill to climb on the return to the city.
Option 2: If you’d like to skip the extra miles and just ride on the car-free Bronx River Parkway, you can meet us at Grand Central Terminal to take the Metro-North train up to Crestwood Station. Meet at the Main Information circular desk with the clock on top that is in the center of the Main Concourse at 8:50am to make the 9:17am Harlem line train. Riders will be responsible for their own train fare. The round trip bike ride from Crestwood to White Plains and returning to Crestwood will be about 12 miles.
Option 3: If you live in Westchester feel free to meet us at the Crestwood Metro-North Station parking lot at 10:15am.
Note:This is an all-gender ride. The ride will begin at 10:30am from Crestwood.
Bike Rentals: If you wish to rent a bike for this ride, Gotham Bicycle Tours offer $50 2-hour bike rentals that can be picked up at Crestwood Station. This rental length will be sufficient for this ride. You will need to arrange the rental for yourself via this link. There are a limited number of bikes so make rental arrangements early.
Rain: In the event of rain or inclement weather, we will make the decision to cancel no later than 6pm on Saturday, September 20th. No rain date is scheduled at this time.
