🌿 About the Role – Youth Development Worker
Are you looking for a meaningful career supporting and uplifting taitamariki (youth)?
We are seeking an energetic, resilient, honest person who is committed to improving the well-being of young people.
You will be working as part of our He Pā Piringa team — a safe, secure, and supportive environment where taitamariki can thrive, reconnect with identity, and discover purpose.
Our vision is simple but powerful:
✨ To provide taitamariki with shelter, skills, and confidence in self and te ao Māori so they can step boldly into the world and succeed beyond their wildest imagination. ✨
You will join a team that is instrumental in turning young lives around. He Pā Piringa operates 24/7, so you must be prepared to work a variety of shifts and be committed to making a positive, lasting difference.
🏡 About Us – Mā Te Huruhuru
Mā Te Huruhuru is a kaupapa Māori organisation grounded in aroha, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.
Born from lived experience of poverty and hardship, we have grown into a respected, high‑impact organisation supporting taitamariki to heal, grow, and achieve.
Our primary purpose:
💛 Every taitamariki who enters our whare leaves with the confidence, attitude, and skills to contribute to their whānau, hapū, iwi, and community.
🪶 Key Responsibilities
Youth Development Workers:
🚀 Support taitamariki to build confidence, identity, and life skills
🛡️ Provide healing‑focused, trauma‑informed support
🔗 Encourage reconnection to culture and purpose
🌱 Help taitamariki grow into strong contributors to whānau and community
🤝 Work across Te Whare Mārama and He Pā Piringa in a dynamic, hands‑on environment
Life experience and cultural grounding are just as valuable as academic qualifications.
✨ Desired Candidate
We want to hear from you if you have:
✅ Understanding of trauma‑informed care
✅ Full NZ driver’s licence
✅ Current First Aid certificate (or willing to obtain)
✅ Knowledge/experience of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo, Tikanga — or willingness to learn
✅ 2–3 yrs experience in youth work, social work, mental health or addictions (preferred)
💛 Real‑life experience working alongside disadvantaged youth
💰 Salary: $60,000–$67,000 (depending on experience/quals)
You must be able to meet:
Children’s Act safety checks
🔍 Police vetting
🧪 Drug & alcohol testing requirements
