In the late 1970s, amid a national energy crisis, the world's largest wind turbine was built on Howard's Knob in Boone, North Carolina. This documentary short chronicles the rise and fall of this groundbreaking project, exploring its impact on the local community, renewable energy innovation and the lessons that shaped the future of wind power.
Dr. Beth Davison is a Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Appalachian State University. She holds a PhD and MS in Sociology from North Carolina State University and a Certificate in Documentary Studies from Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies. As lead organizer for Boone Docs Film Festival and co-director of App Docs, Dr. Davison is a local documentary filmmaker with over a dozen projects to her credit that have screened in film festivals, internationally and on PBS stations. Her documentary portfolio spans diverse topics from Appalachian culture and history to environmental conservation and community organizations. In addition to her filmmaking work, Dr. Davison produces the podcast "Everybody Eats: A Movement" about non-profit community cafes and teaches courses ranging from documentary production and video editing to research methods. Her expertise bridges sociology, documentary studies, and visual storytelling.
Aaron Barlow is a 24-year-old Boone native. He graduated from App State this Spring with a B.S. in Communication, Journalism. Aaron is passionate about non-fiction storytelling in all its forms, and currently writes for The Tomahawk newspaper in Mountain City, Tennessee.
This event is in-person only, and will take place in the Watauga County Public Library Community Room, Wednesday, September 3 at 5:30pm.
