Bruce Coates, Aaron Diaz, Barry Edwards, Trevor LinesBruce Coates - saxophones
Bruce is an improvising saxophonist who studied at DeMontfort University, Leicester with, amongst others, Gavin Bryars, Dave Smith and Christopher Hobbs. He has performed and/or recorded with a range of notable improvisers including Paul Dunmall, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, Mark Sanders, Tony Marsh, Walt Shaw, Phil Gibbs, Xhosa Cole and Matthew Grigg.
He is cofounder of the Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra and a founder member of SLIE (the South Leicestershire Improvisers Ensemble) with Lee Allatson, Virginia Anderson, Christopher Hobbs, Trevor Lines, Rick Nance and Peter Wyeth. He is also curator of the Stourbridge Festival of Improvised Music. Barry Edwards - guitar
Barry Edwards, also known as Bazmatron, is a jazz guitarist and improviser based in the UK. He is particularly active in the fields of free improvisation and experimental music. A graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Edwards has developed a distinctive style that blends traditional jazz with avant-garde and experimental elements.
He has performed and collaborated with a range of notable figures in the UK improvisational music scene, including Paul Dunmall and Neil Metcalfe. In addition to his live performances, Edwards is also known for his work as a composer for media, contributing music to projects such as the Netflix series Spy Ops.
Aaron Diaz - trumpet/electronics
Aaron Diaz is a trumpeter, composer and whose work explores the meeting point between traditional music and improvisation, acoustic timbres and electronic manipulation, form and freedom. He has been playing trumpet in jazz & improvised music for the last 20 years and is currently leading a music outreach programme at Birmingham Conservatoire.
He also works with electronics and live processing including recent performances with the likes of Paul Dunmall and Mark Sanders. Aaron is a regular member of Propellor, Ensemble, ELDA, The Destroyers, Young Pilgrims, Sid Peacock’s SURGE Orchestra and was a founder member of The Fair Rain (previously The Old Dance School). He has also performed and appeared with, Food (Iain Ballamy & Thomas Strōnen), The Neil Yates & Mike McGoldrick Undivided big band and Django Bates.
Trevor Lines – double bass
Trevor has been performing in the field of free improvisation for nearly 45 years, initially on percussion & electronics with Birmingham Musicians Co-operative before switching to bass. He leads the comprovisation group So You Say (with Bruce Coates and Sarah Farmer), Remember Fingers and Nugo. He is co-leader of Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra and has also performed with Lee Allatson and Bruce Coates in SLIE.
In 2020 SLAM Records released ‘Locked’. a collection of trios, quartets, and solos featuring Trevor, Bruce, Ed Gauden, and Barry Edwards. He is Visiting Lecturer in free improvisation and jazz history at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. “too seasoned a performer to simply go for the obvious” (Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD)
