Director Jennie Livingston follows drag queens, trans women, and young Black and Latino men competing in “balls,” where categories ranged from “executive realness” to “vogue.” These events were more than competitions; they were safe havens in an era of poverty, racism, and the AIDS crisis. The music, the dancing, the runway struts — everything was about self-expression and claiming visibility.
