Guided Hike to Waun Fach & The Dragon’s Back Ridge – Bannau Brycheiniog
Join us for a full-day guided hike through the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park, as we explore the rugged beauty of the mountains, valleys, and historical sites of this incredible area. Our hike takes us to Waun Fach, the second-highest peak in the park at 811m, and along the legendary Y Grib Ridge – also known as the Dragon’s Back. Along the way, we’ll visit Dinas Castle, an ancient Iron Age hillfort and Norman castle with panoramic views over the Rhiangoll Valley.
Event Highlights:
Distance: 23 km
Total Ascent: 950 m
Duration: Full day (7-8 hours)
Fitness Level: A good level of fitness is required for this moderate-to-challenging hike.
We’ll meet at the Dinas Castle Inn, located in the peaceful village of Pengenffordd at the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. From here, we’ll begin our hike, heading toward the second-highest peak in the park, Waun Fach. The route will take us through beautiful moorland and heathland, offering breathtaking views of the glacial valleys, surrounding mountain ranges, and peaceful valleys below.
The steady climb to the summit of Waun Fach offers sweeping views across the park, with panoramic vistas of the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, and distant peaks like Pen y Fan. At 811m, the summit provides incredible views in every direction. On clear days, you’ll be able to spot landmarks all the way to Cardigan Bay and the Pembrokeshire coastline.

After reaching Waun Fach, we’ll continue along the iconic Y Grib Ridge, affectionately known as the Dragon’s Back. This serpentine ridge offers exhilarating walking, with exposed sections and dramatic drops that reward hikers with even more spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons. From the ridge, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over the Rhiangoll Valley and beyond, providing a perfect photo opportunity.
Our hike will conclude with a visit to Dinas Castle, an Iron Age hillfort and later Norman castle situated at 450m above sea level. This strategic hilltop site offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside, and is one of the highest castle remains in England and Wales. The ruins of the castle provide fascinating insights into the region's military history and offer a peaceful spot to reflect on the day's adventure.
This is a moderate-to-challenging hike with a total ascent of 950m, requiring a good level of fitness. The terrain includes steep ascents, rocky ridgelines, and moorland paths, making it ideal for those who enjoy a full day of hiking in rugged, varied terrain. There are some exposed sections, especially along the Dragon’s Back, which may require a bit of caution. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended.
