About this Event

Watery Commons Deptford

Everyone Welcome (walking collective)

Join Everyone Welcome walking collective as part of InspiralLondon Hydrodetours' exploration of watery commons in Deptford. We will begin our walk at the river Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park where Friends of Brookmill Park will share their experiences of maintaining this waterway and green corridor while protecting access for wildlife and local communities. From here we’ll follow the tide down Deptford Creek to the River Thames, completing our walk at Convoys Wharf, the site of the former Royal Tudor Dockyard.

We'll take in railway bridges, footbridges, ancient and modern pathways.

We'll pass through places with names referencing Deptford's historical connections with a watery landscape – Brookmill, Tidemill, Creekside, Stowage, Deptford Strand, Watergate Street and the Mastershipwright's Palace. Stepping onto the foreshore of Deptford Beach at low tide, you'll be invited to an interactive performance and to reflect on the issue of access to rivers and creeks.

On route we will hear from activists, conservationists, creekside boat dwellers and more about some of the layers of history, including social histories and recent anti-gentrification battles, that make up the ongoing story of this part of London and its watery commons.
