Watertown author John Miles will be signing his new book, “Miles from Anywhere,” Saturday, Nov. 16, noon-2 pm at DDR Books.Quenton (Q.C.) Miles was the grandson of Irish immigrants, son of Dust bowl farmers, decorated World War II pilot, well-known teacher and coach in his native South Dakota, father of 11 children, and an alcoholic. His son, John, born on Father’s Day, was a hospital chaplain and former priest with two sons of his own. While exploring his father’s roots, he finds his own life at a painful crossroads when his ten-year marriage dissolves. He goes in search of the missing parts of his life by traveling the back roads and visiting the rural towns where his nomadic family once lived. “Miles From Anywhere” takes us on another journey of discovery and introduces us to some of the unique characters of a distinctive Midwest culture.
At the age of twenty-three, a Catholic seminary student listens to a song, and the seed is planted in his mind to one day write a book. At the same age, this young man’s father had already completed a year of college, taught three years in a country school, graduated from flight training, flown over 150 combat missions, and had a half-dozen close brushes with death. “Miles From Anywhere” is a love song from a son to his father.
This book is of special interest to athletic coaches and former athletes, as Q.C. coached basketball and taught math for many years, with stops including Gann Valley, Forestburg, Macintosh, and Clark.
