About this Event

Event Schedule:

You may arrive early before the class if you want to bring any donations inside when you come for the class.

1 :30-2:30: Successfully Starting Native Plants from Seed (Inside the conference room): Learn what it takes to start native plants from seed. Learn the timing and techniques to successfully start native plant from seed. Planting indoors and outside will be discussed.

2:40-3:40: Budget Friendly Vegetable Gardening (Inside the conference room) Inputs for gardeing are increasingly more expensive. Learn methods and hacks for making home gardening an affordable way to have fresh vegetables.

4:00 Seed / Plant Swap will open for everyone (While you may attend just the plant swap, the room will not open until after the classes are over)

  • Seed library table
  • See the Indoor seed starting room
  • Special plant raffles
  • Bring any unwanted items related to gardening. Pots, tools, supplies. Anything left over will be donated, recycled, or thrown away.

Info: Learn the timing and techniques to successfully start native plant from seed. Planting indoors and outside will be discussed.

Budget Friendly Vegetable Gardening (In Conference Center)

Info: The cost of plants, seeds, fertilizer, growing medium, and other gardening products is on the rise. This class will provide advice and hacks for keeping vegetable gardening more affordable, so you can reap the benefit of saving money by growing your own food.

Training and Pruning a Young Apple Tree (on hill adjacent to parking lot)

Info: The first 5 years of growing your apple tree are the most important in terms of proper pruning and training for future success. Learn how to train your tree to the central leader system. Gain confidence to cut the leader to encourage lateral branching. Learn to select scaffold branches and set them at the proper angle for greatest strength. See pruning examples on trees in the Watauga Extension Master Gardener Educational Garden.

Info: Come see our new greenhouse and learn how it works. See the lettuce plants that we are growing and harvesting for the Farm Cafe. Learn how we start and care for our plants.

Sharpening and maintaining tools

Info: Learn how to sharpen tools such as lopers and pruners. Learn other aspects of getting your tools ready for the gardening season. Feel free to bring tools and we will help you sharpen them.
