Wassail is an old English word meaning 'be healthy', 'be whole', or 'hale and hearty'. Wassailing the trees in the orchard is an ancient custom to wake them up from their winter sleep and bring a bountiful crop of fruit in season. This tradition recognises the importance of our relationship to nature and in a ceremony led by local members of the Order of Bards Ovates and Druids we will toast a chosen apple tree with an offering of cider poured over its roots. We then encourage the making of as much noise by all so bring drums or tin lids! This is followed by a sharing of the wassail bowl, refreshments and bardic entertainment.
