Their ninth LP, “South Shore,” is Hayden’s closest venture into a concept album, recounting his small-town upbringing, the challenges of leaving, and the pursuit of dreams.
In their two-decade journey, the band earned seven Boston Music Awards, the French Country Music Awards’ Independent Artist of the Year, and an Americana Music Awards nomination. “South Shore,” released on Faster Horses Recordings, reflects Hayden’s return to Scituate, his coastal hometown. The album, produced by Rob Loyot, captures reflections on hometown nostalgia, lessons learned, and uncertainties of the future. From the briskly cantering “Write a Song” to the philosophical meditation of “The Great Unknown,” the album weaves a tapestry of Hayden’s experiences and contemplations.
Ward Hayden’s musical roots, influenced by his mother’s love for classic country and father’s cowboy culture, shaped his unique journey. Starting with drums in high school rock bands, a Johnny Cash cassette altered his course, leading him back to country. Leaving teaching at 24, Hayden embraced music, forming Girls Guns & Glory and navigating the Boston scene’s challenges.
As the band rose to prominence, major labels courted them, but Hayden chose independence. Controversies led to a name change, and Ward Hayden & The Outliers emerged with a left-field take on country. The current lineup, featuring Josh Kiggans, Cody Nilsen, and Handsome Greg Hall, continues to embrace a distinctive sound.
Hayden’s passion for vintage sounds extends to collecting country music memorabilia. A nostalgic collector, he treasures artifacts from Elvis Presley’s Jungle Room monkey to Hank Thompson’s leather hat.
