War Against Breast Cancer Raffle-Auction & Family Fun Event

One of Trumbull County’s largest basket raffles will kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month when it returns Sept. 28 to the Trumbull County Fairgrounds to raise money for a local breast cancer survivor.

The 14th Annual War Against Breast Cancer Raffle-Auction will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a Cow Patty Bingo contest, costumed princesses and superheroes, live music, food and sweet treats, free archery and an archery contest to win free steak for a year. Admission and parking are free.

The Raffle-Auction will boast hundreds of items up for bid, including a Killer Instinct crossbow, flat-screen TV, scratch-off Lottery ticket bundles, family photography sessions, wine and liquor-themed baskets, tickets to concerts, comedy shows, family fun parks and sporting events, hunting gear, toys for all ages and gift cards to dozens of local and national restaurants. General item tickets are 2 for $1. Tickets for items valued at $100 or more are $1 each and tickets for items valued at $300 or more are $5 each. Winners do not need to be present for the 4:15 p.m. drawing.

The Cow Patty Bingo contest, which starts at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, will begin when Brutus the Brahman cow from Zoo-2-Go Animal Adventures is led into a fenced-in area that has been marked with a bingo-like grid and numbered from 1 to 200. Brutus will pick the winner when he leaves a present on one of the numbered squares. This year’s prize is up to $500 and a Texas Roadhouse – Niles Butcher’s Basket. Only 300 tickets will be sold. Cow Patty Bingo tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at https://tinyurl.com/CowPattyBingoTickets until Sept. 27 or in person at the Sept. 28 event until the bingo’s 1:30 p.m. start time.

The archery contest will be held from 11:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 28. Anyone who hits a bullseye wins free steak for a year from Texas Roadhouse – Niles. Each attempt is $5 and you will receive a coupon for a free Texas Roadhouse appetizer even if you miss the target. The archery trailer is free to use any time outside of the contest.

The event, which is sponsored by Texas Roadhouse – Niles, the Mullee Family/Boss Babes LLC, Hope Center for Cancer Care, Curtis Layer Design/Build, Shaker Painting, the Howland Hope Chest LLC, Realtor Darlene Kearney of Coldwell Banker/Schmidt Realty in partnership with the Trumbull County Fair Board, will help Stage 3 breast cancer survivor Joyce Hurst of West Farmington Township with her out-of-pocket medical expenses. Joyce, a mother of two daughters and grandmother of five children, works as a medical biller for Steward Medical Group, which has filed for bankruptcy and plans to sell Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She faces thousands of dollars in medical bills because Trumbull Memorial doesn’t offer cancer services and all of her chemotherapy treatments, oncology appointments and booster shots were billed at the much higher out-of-network cost or not covered by her insurance at all.

The fundraiser, which serves as a kickoff for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, is being organized by This Means War Against Breast Cancer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed to help breast cancer survivors pay their medical expenses not covered by insurance. The all-volunteer group has raised more than $173,000 for local breast cancer survivors since its inaugural fundraiser in 2011.
