On Friday, July 4th, while others are having barbecues and lighting sparklers, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater, in association with the American Genre Film Archive, stands on the corner and leeringly asks….WANNA SEE SOMETHING WEIRD?
We present a firecracker of a Friday night as we celebrate the greatest American crackpot video company of all time, the Sultans of Sinema, Seattle’s legendary Something Weird! Feast your eyes on a deliciously devious badass babes double feature of two 35mm cult classics from the Something Weird Vault, TEENAGE GANG DEBS (1966) and SHE-MOB (1968)! We’re thrilled to host this Gathering Of The Weird-os, and to welcome the Queen of Weird herself, Lisa Petrucci to The Mahoning, meeting fans and vending Weird wares Friday and Saturday (at THE AGFA TRIPLE RIPPER IV)!
Born from the fiery filmic fury of Mike Vraney in 1990, Something Weird Video became the leading purveyor of peculiar pictures, initially offering VHS transfers of 16mm nudie and exploitation loops via mail , then moving on to 35mm feature films from the libraries of filmmakers like David F. Friedman, Doris Wishman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Harry Novak, Coffin Joe, and more.
Juvenile Delinquent dramas, sexploitation shockers, rock n’ roll rumblers, gore operas, peep show peculiarities, endless volumes of rare trailers, educational films, Drive-In snack bar ads and more, Something Weird led the way in curating cult cinema on home video, rescuing countless titles and bringing to light filmmakers and genres from the 30s-70s that were up to that point unsung, paving the way for the modern boutique labels that flourished in the 90s and beyond.
First to sleaze up the screen is TEENAGE GANG DEBS (1966)! Over-sexed…kick-happy…thrill-hungry…they all talk, fight and love, just one way…dirty! Filmed in marauding monochrome in gritty New York City!
If you survive that frenzy of female ferocity, strap in, strap on, and HOLD ON…for the SHE-MOB (1968)! Four fist-flinging inmates from a women’s prison bust out in a raving rampage, kidnapping a rich lady’s man for their wanton womanly, pent-up proclivities! Beware Big Shim and her sapphic sisters of sin! Filmed in black and blue in wild, wild, Waco, Texas!
Curated by Lisa Petrucci of Something Weird and Ivan Peycheff of AGFA, WANNA SEE SOMETHING WEIRD will feature vintage 35mm trailers and intermission material from the Something Weird archive, just what the disreputable doctor ordered to start your 4th of July weekend with a bang!
