About this Event

September 17th album release concert & celebration for Atomic Sound Record Company release of Walter Parks & The Unlawful Assembly debut recording.

Classic spirituals and hymns universally inspire, empower and unite. Guitarist Walter Parks, longtime sideman to Woodstock legend Richie Havens, reimagines and tributes this historic music with The Unlawful Assembly featuring collaborator/ drummer/producer Steven Williams, Ada Dyer on vocals, Paul Frazier on bass, Michael Bellar on organ, and Andrae Murchison on trombone.

In one live concert experience, The Unlawful Assembly entertains and informs while successfully melding roots music of divergent origins. The soundtrack to American black history – old-school spirituals, gospel, blues, and Pr*son work chants intertwine with swamp hollers, shaped-note hymns, and Appalachian reels of white homesteader origin. All are presented with Parks’s native Northeast Florida swampy feel which borrows from southern rock, jazz, and early 70’s soul. A few of the gospel classics even rest joyfully upon a foundation of modern electronic loops. Reimagined covers and traditional songs include: “Wade In The Water”, “Follow The Drinking Gourd”, “Down By The Riverside”, “Steal Away”, “Old Blind Barnabus”, “Amazing Grace” and “Early In The Mornin’”. Walter contributes “Georgia Rice” and a co-write with Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on “Shoulder It”.

Special Guest Opener Edan Archer

Edan Archer’s full-length album Journey Proud came out in August 2019 and has received strong praise from the country and Americana curators, including American Songwriter, Rolling Stone, Parade Magazine, Wide Open Country, The Boot, and more. The ten-song follow-up to 2016’s EP Cruel Mother touch on timeless themes of love, loneliness, death, and drinking and promises to be a fresh staple for this evolving genre.

Edan Archer is a Gainesville, Florida native and Nashville lurker. Her background in Appalachian folk and rock merge into a style characterized by fingerpicking, electric dulcimer, rock, and roll energy, and country hooks. Edan has performed at Stagecoach, SXSW, Americanafest, Canadian Music Week, Carnaval On The Mile, SouthWest Air Live at 35, and others.
