About this Event

How did London become the world’s greatest money market, the undisputed financial capital of the world by the end of the nineteenth century? During the long reign of Queen Victoria the City of London was transformed – the era of financial institutions arrived! The men of business, bankers and lawyers slowly took over as churches closed, schools moved out, the great coaching inns were rendered obsolete by railways, and the residential population declined. Hear about how clearing banks evolved, how trade was financed and the scandalous stories of spectacular bank failures and huge financial losses and find out why they didn’t stop the inexorable rise of the London financial markets.
