About this Event
Join qualified City of Westminster Guide Joanna Moncrieff on a Sunday morning stroll exploring three contrasting areas – the former working canal area of Paddington Basin, the old village of Paddington now ‘marooned’ on the other side of the Westway and the lesser travelled streets of the tourist hub of Little Venice.
We start in the area once known derisively as ‘Stinking Paddington’ or the ‘Paddington Alps’ because of the piles of rubbish that awaited transportation out of London.
Although some imagination is required in the area which was once the old village of Paddington there is still evidence of its former life and connections with the wealthy and famous.
Names of streets and blocks of flats give clues to the area’s history although not all the commemorative plaques can be taken at face value.
Our walk passes a number of pubs* both dead and alive many with fascinating histories. The walk finishes at the grandest pub in the area which is said to have once been a brothel! The walk finishes close to both Maida Vale and Warwick Avenue tube stations.
Meeting point
We will be meeting outside M&S, Edgware Road side. This is circled on the map below. You will see that there are separate Edgware Road stations depending on what line you arrive on. M&S is between the two and opposite the Hilton Metropole Hotel.
See the Tyburn Stone before the walk
If you're early it’s really worth popping into the Hilton Metropole (main entrance) to see the Tyburn Stone which is hidden in plain sight in the doorway. See more info here: find-the-tyburn-stone
* There will be no pub stops on this walk but we do finish at a pub. You might want to consider lunch after the walk and if you contact me I can give you suggestions of places nearby.
