About this Event

Put on your walking shoes and join in on this fascinating tour of one of Washington DC’s oldest facilities.

Established in 1799, the Washington Navy Yard played a crucial role to the World War II war effort and was a major employer to local residents and a growing immigrant population. On the tour, you’ll see some of the major historic buildings and homes associated with the Navy Yard, learn about the people who lived and worked in the buildings and what purpose the buildings served. See the current museum building which was originally built in 1899 as an industrial gun factory that produced ammunition. The tour will give you a sense of history, time, and place. You’ll learn that the Washington Navy Yard has a story to tell, and most importantly, a legacy contributing to the historical fabric of the nation’s capital. The tour will be lead by museum educator, Mike Galloway and lasts approximately 60 minutes.

The Washington Navy Yard Tour is offered two Saturdays each month, June through October. NOTE: This is the last scheduled Saturday Washington Navy Yard Tour for the year. See you in June 2022!

Note: Due to security requirements at the Washington Navy Yard, you will need to be escorted onto the base. If taking metro, get on the Green Line and exit the Navy Yard/Ballpark stop, then walk to the entrance at 11th and O Street SE (about 15 minutes). Plan to arrive at the entrance gate by 10:00 AM. Please be prompt. A museum educator will be at the entrance gate to bring you onto the base and to start the tour. The last gate pickup will occur at 10:20 AM with the tour starting from inside the museum at 10:30 AM. If you need to contact the museum on the day of your tour, call our front desk at 202.685.0589. It is recommended you wear comfortable shoes for walking, and bring a bottle of water. Head coverings are optional depending on the weather.

Parking Option: If driving, you can use the nearby Harris Teeters underground parking garage (401 M Street SE). Parking is free for 90 minutes. Once you park, you will need to go into the store and validate your ticket. Keep your ticket. You will need it to exit the garage.

After validating your ticket, exit the store and walk to the 11th and O Street SE Navy Yard entrance (approximately 10 minutes). Have your driver’s license or other form of government issued I.D. with you.

Mask Guidelines: A mask is required for all visitors while inside the museum or while attending any inside program. A mask is not required (if you are fully vaccinated) anywhere outside on the Washington Navy Yard grounds. Social distancing will be observed for all inside seated public programs.
